Jewish deli, The Flying Fig brings a touch of New York City to the streets of North Adelaide.
For those unfamiliar with Jewish fare, you’ll find it to be strong and bold in flavour – a delightful shock to the senses with salty elements such as pickled vegetables and traditional cured meats like brisket and salmon being key. A must-try example on the menu of these cultural tastes is ‘chrain’, a beetroot and horseradish relish.
The Flying Fig executes these unique, Jewish flavours so well thanks to head chef, Tom Lawrence. Experienced both in Australia and Europe, Tom brings to the table his worldly talents in baking, smoking and preserving, making him a perfect fit for the Flying Fig Deli. Bagels, smoked meats, curing and pickling are all done in-house with the philosophy that the team know exactly what’s going into the dish and can ensure its top quality.
Their signature dish, the Grilled Reuben combines a large range of in-house ingredients including corned beef, sauerkraut and Russian dressing. Lined with a piece of Swisse cheese and between two slices of wholesome rye bread, the sandwich is created in the traditional way with generous helpings of corned beef, and a house-made half sour dill pickle – yum!
