Five DIY Beauty Hacks To Try At Home

Puffy under eye bags, cracked and dry lips, lacklustre hair – these are just a few problem areas that can keep re-occurring now that the cold weather is here. While we’re happy shell out for products to help us fix our skin, some of the easiest (and cheapest) ways can probably be found in your fridge and pantry. So let us help you with a few little DIY beauty hacks that you can probably try while reading this.

Green Tea for Tired Eyes

So this is an age old one, and it does work pretty well. We all know those days when we haven’t had enough sleep and you wake up feeling like you can’t even open your eyes. Just grab some green (or black) tea bags and soak them in hot water for about 3 minutes and transfer them to cool down in the fridge for 15. Then lay them on your eyes for another 20 minutes. The caffeine in the tea is meant to shrink the blood vessels and therefore, reduce puffiness and dark circles. (You’ll find that most eye treatments will contain caffeine in them as well.)

Avocado for Damaged Hair

Okay, so putting avocado in your hair may seem like a waste when you can have it on your toast instead but stay with us here. All it takes is: half an avocado, quarter cup of mayonnaise (this is to detangle your hair), 2 tablespoons of coconut oil (because coconut oil fixes everything) and 1 tablespoon of honey. Whisk or blend until smooth, apply evenly to your hair, leave in for 30 minutes then wash out with a cleansing conditioner. And while it may sound like an interesting thickshake (and the reason why we can’t afford houses), it really does apparently give you some seriously smooth results.

Sugar for soft lips

Why pay for a lip exfoliator when you can probably make the exact same one at home? Those delicious smelling and tasting ones probably have the main base ingredient of sugar anyway so just grab some of your own and add to it some cacao powder and raw honey. Mix them all together in a contain then apply to your lips and scrub away. Then apply coconut oil… because coconut oil fixes everything.

Beetroot for a lip stain

$50 for a lip stain? Please! We all know that beetroot stains absolutely everything so why not use it to our advantage? Grab a beetroot, wash/peel/chop then pop it into a blender or food processor then strain the juice. Add (yep, you guessed it) a tablespoon coconut oil to the juice – or more if you want a sheer lip colour. You can pop some honey in as well before you mix it all together and leave it in the fridge to solidify before use.

Orange to exfoliate

This is probably the easiest one of the lot. It only requires oranges. The vitamin C and acidity in oranges makes it a great natural exfoliant. Simply chop in half and use it on your elbows and knees. For other uses of the citrus family – lemons also remove those pesky dark nail polish stains.
